Lake Chapala (Spanish: Lago de Chapala) is Mexico’s largest freshwater lake and is the source of potable water for the area and Guadalajara. At the north end are the municipalities of Chapala, Ajijic, Jocotepec, San Juan Cosala, Santa Cruz de la Solidad and San Nicolas IBarra.  Collectively this area is often referred to as ‘Lakeside’.  The population of this area is 45,000.

Located 47 km southeast of Guadalajara, Jalisco, this area is some 5000 feet above sea level.  The lake is approximately 80 km (50 mi) long and averages 12.5 km (7.8 miles) wide, and covers an approximate area of 1,100 km2 (420 sq mi).

Chapala is well established as a weekend getaway for Guadalajara residents.  It is also home to a sizable group of expatriates (Canadians, Americans and Europeans) that are seasonal or permanent residents.  Most of the Lakeside area’s expatriate population reside across the Lakeside area.
